The Mystic and Tioga circles are sponsoring the April expedition
event, rock climbing at Planet Granite
in Sunnyvale on Sat, April 4th, 2009, from 2:00-5:00.
If you are only attending (not belaying) go here.
But you should consider becoming a belayer - the training
sessions are a great time. You
get to learn a skill that you can use with all your children at
any time and you get a lot of one-on-one time with your daughter during
the training.
This is an event which requires some parent participation. The dads get to "belay" while the daughters climb. Belaying is not hard work. It basically consists of holding the safety rope while the climber climbs. We would like to get as many dads as possible certified as belayers so that we don't have a lot of our daughters standing around.
The belayers have to be trained and certified by Planet Granite to be able to do this duty. Training consists of attending one of the training sessions listed below with a daughter (or son), then taking a short test sometime before the event (no child involved). These sessions are also for dads who are already certified belayers but would like to brush up on their skills. A brush-up on belay skills is highly recommended, especially if you haven't done any belaying since the last climbing event.
There are scheduled training sessions for March 16th and 22nd. Planet Granite is only going to allow up to four dads and daughters at each time slot which will be determined by the requests received.
Anyone attending the training sessions needs to bring their daughter to train with. Your daughter should bring a bike helmet to wear during the session.
At a separate time following training, you must pass a short test given by a Planet Granite employee.
For those dads who received belay cards last year, they are still valid. However, Planet Granite strongly recommends that you attend one of the training sessions as a refresher course.
If you're willing to be a belayer for this event, please notify your circle navigator and/or one of the training coordinators ASAP.
Belaying dads are required to sign a waiver, and must bring a photocopy of their drivers license to the event.
Check back here for more information on this event.
Planet Granite
is located at 815 Stewart Drive in Sunnyvale. You can follow
the link to get directions to the Sunnyvale facility.
You may continue climbing after the Sierra Expedition event as long as the facility is open.
You will need to complete a waiver form before you can use the facility. The PDF form can be found at http://www.planetgranite.com/waiver/minor_waiver_April2005.pdf. It will save time if you print this at home and then bring the completed form with you to Planet Granite. A waiver is needed for both you and your princess(es).
For climbing, kids need appropriate clothing and safety gear. Specifically, close-toed shoes (not sandals), thin pants (not shorts), and some kind of helmet (preferably a bike helmet). They have some helmets available if you don't have one, but not enough for all of the girls.
The Expedition will be providing snacks, but it's a good idea to bring along your own water bottle.
Once there, you may climb with any certified belayer (all the belayers are volunteers from our Expedition). Belayers will have a red belaying certification card attached to their harness.
Have FUN!
